Mother/baby yoga

These classes are similar to hatha yoga classes, but are gentler. The postures and sequences have been modified to be appropriate for the postpartum body, including after a cesarean or an episiotomy/tear.

Classes begin with a mindfulness meditation with the baby on the mother’s lap.

The postures and sequences are done with the baby along side of, or on top of the mother. Each class includes chants and lullabies, as well as playtime where mothers engage with the babies and each other in fun and meaningful ways.  Time is dedicated to pelvic floor recuperation. Classes end with a deep relaxation, snuggle time, or walking meditation, depending on what the baby needs.

The baby’s needs are always put first. Because of this, there is often what I call a gentle chaos going on: some mothers doing yoga with their babies, others breastfeeding or changing a diaper, and still others doing walking meditation and singing “Om Shanti” to soothe a fussy little one. These classes are fun and teach mothers that they can stretch and strengthen their bodies while having their babies close by. This is an excellent opportunity to for mothers to meet and be in community with other mothers while rediscovering their bodies.

There is usually time for questions and answers. I draw from the immediate needs of the mothers as they arise, or if nothing comes up, I have a host of themes to talk about including sleep, sex, and other changes that come with an infant at home.
